Weekday scheduling—running cron jobs only on Monday through Friday—is one of the most common patterns in business automation. The vast majority of business processes operate on a five-day workweek: payroll calculations, customer support workflows, financial reconciliations, and operational reports all follow the Monday-to-Friday rhythm.

Weekday Cron Syntax

To restrict a job to weekdays, specify 1-5 in the day-of-week field. The expression 0 9 * * 1-5 runs at 9:00 AM Monday through Friday. The named form 0 9 * * MON-FRI is more readable. You can combine with hour ranges: */30 9-17 * * 1-5 runs every 30 minutes between 9 AM and 5 PM on weekdays.

Important: standard cron does not natively understand public holidays. A job scheduled for 0 9 * * 1-5 will run on bank holidays. If you need true "business day" scheduling, implement that logic in the script itself.

Common Weekday Scheduling Patterns

• Morning briefings: 0 7 * * 1-5 generates summaries before the workday begins.
• Business-hours monitoring: */5 8-18 * * 1-5 for aggressive SLA checks during the day.
• Daily financial reconciliation: 0 18 * * 1-5 for end-of-day matching.
• Workday-aligned data syncs: 0 6 * * 1-5 ensures fresh data for the business day.
• CI/CD nightly builds: 0 3 * * 1-5 for comprehensive test suites.

Best Practices for Weekday-Only Job Scheduling

• Always anchor to an explicit timezone. 0 9 * * 1-5 on a UTC server may fire at 4 AM local time.
• Design Monday jobs to handle weekend accumulation. A job using "last 24 hours" will miss Saturday and Sunday. Use persistent cursors instead.
